Resolved: Room displays going to sleep in iOS 11

The engineering team is currently investigating an issue with iPads running the latest versions of Rooms v3.0 and iOS 11. In some cases, devices are going to sleep despite the Rooms app running in Guided Access mode, and/or set to "Never Lock". Android + Chromebase devices are unaffected.

An update released on December 8, 2017 should resolve this issue.

Scope + Impact

Specifically iOS 11 exacerbated a memory leak for certain types of long running apps like Robin. After running for ~2 weeks on average, the device would run out of memory and cause the app to close. Once the app was restarted, the timer would restart.

The average device would experience this issue as the device going to sleep unexpectedly after running for multiple days. In our tests, this typically occurred after 1-2 weeks of continuous running, depending on iPad model. In rare cases, we've seen this in earlier version of iOS as well.

Version 3.0.1 addresses this issue.
