What is presence?
Presence (exactly like it sounds) is how Robin learns who is in the room. When you walk into a room with a proximity beacon in it, the mobile app tells the room that you've arrived. The app will periodically let the room know you're there and update any calendars connected to the room. We call this presence.
Keep in mind that this kind of system isn't the same as a motion sensor. As neat as it would be to instantly detect everyone with minute level resolution, the technology and settings will vary by phone. The majority of Robin's presence interactions are for better in-app context and smarter notifications (e.g. "Would you like to book this room?").
"Can I use this to get logs of who enters each room?"
As great as indoor location is, the technology is not at a point where you should view it as a good way for audit logs. Even if it was, we'd strongly discourage this path for a number of reasons.
Presence in Robin is meant to help people get started in nearby space around the office, not be an audit-able attendance system. While some of the data might seem similar at first glance, you're unlikely to find success if you go down this road for a number of reasons requiring a time machine to the future. Yes, this includes
The presence data in a room is one of many signals (e.g. calendars) Robin uses to help answer the "How do people use this room?" question. If you're looking for higher resolution (strictly) occupancy information, you'll probably want to look at more conventional motion sensors.
"How does Robin know who I am?"
The mobile app uses the Bluetooth in your phone to communicate with beacons and Robin.
Proximity beacons essentially call out the name of their assigned rooms. The app will periodically scan beacon signals nearby. When your phone realizes you've walked near a beacon, the Robin app will notify the space that you (or, more specifically, your device) are near the beacon. Depending on your phone's settings, this can be anywhere from < 1 minute to 20 minutes.
"How do I set up beacons?"
We've written a guide for beacon setup here.
"Can I manage my privacy settings?"
Your location is only shared with the people in your company. You can change your visibility settings within the mobile app at any time.
